Have an Azalea in Your Garden? How to Grow Nature’s Show-offs.
An azalea fan? Can’t wait for them to bloom each year? The lifeless yards in your neighborhood are probably dreary after winter and you’re ready for color. One spring morning you finally see it. The neighbor’s hedge has burst with a sudden splash of vibrant pinks and incredible purples. You smile…ah, they’re blooming …spring is here at last!
This site answers all your common garden questions about azaleas. Transplanting, pruning, fertilizing, potting, propagating, pests: it’s all covered here. And, to top it off, take a picture walk through the slide show (see the Photo Gallery button). You’ll find some amazing flowers to enjoy.
Investigate which flower types will grow best in your area before planting. The evergreens are hybrids of natives from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. They are commonly planted in gardening zones that have a temperate climate. The deciduous varieties are those that lose their leaves each winter. Their colors include the yellows and oranges, and they are tolerant of colder climates.
My Gardening Background
Over twenty five years ago, my parents gave me an azalea for my apartment. It was lovely, but I didn’t know how to care for it. And there wasn’t even an internet site to research for answers. Okay, okay, I am old: there wasn’t even an internet. That same plant resides in my garden to this day.
But two decades of planting and experimenting have changed everything. I’ve experimented with different flower types, learned about gardening zones, and taken any number of cuttings. I’m now the first one to check for blossoms each spring, and I eagerly water, prune, and baby my plants. The best part of it is that I still have so much to learn! They’ve become my passion: a passion I want to share with you.
